JACKSON -

The Mississippi Department of Employment Security received an additional $1.6 million grant from the U.S. Department of Labor. This National Emergency Grant will support an On-the-Job Training program that assists Mississippi employers and workers.  The grant will also provide job counseling and other services to the unemployed.

The funds will provide an additional 300 job training opportunities under an existing program that supplements a portion of workers’ salaries while they undergo on-the-job training. The grant, made available by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, will target job training in the Mississippi Delta and Northeast Mississippi.

“This program helps employers fill positions while getting workers trained and into full-time jobs,” said Les Range, Executive Director of MDES. “It is just one more example of the innovative programs we are implementing to get Mississippians back to work.”

The grant will also aid the Re-employment Assistance program, which assists individuals who have been unemployed for an extended period of time.  This program provides additional assistance such as: job development, job referral, and job counseling.

Employers interested in participating in the On-the-Job Training program may contact MDES at (1-888-844-3577) or visit any WIN Job Center.
