McComb - The Mississippi Department of Employment Security expanded computer services at its McComb WIN Job Center, part of the agency’s continuing effort to enhance services.

Using computers that had been in its Jackson office, MDES created a computer lab in the McComb WIN Job Center and added stations to the computer-resource area, an open space customers use for job-related computer activity.

“An increasing number of businesses only accept online applications,” said MDES Deputy Executive Director Stan McMorris. “These computers give our customers more opportunities to apply for jobs online and post resumes.”

Customers also may use these computers to apply for Unemployment Insurance through MDES and search the agency’s job database.

MDES operates the McComb WIN Job Center in conjunction with Southcentral Mississippi Works, the local administrator that receives Workforce Investment Act funding distributed by the U.S. Department of Labor. Southcentral Mississippi Works pays for training provided to WIN Job Center customers.

“The new computer lab means we’ll be able to provide job-related testing and some computer-training opportunities at the McComb WIN Job Center,” said James McGuffee, workforce coordinator with Southcentral Mississippi Works.

Previously, customers were sent to Southwest Community College in Summit for testing. MDES and Southcentral Mississippi Works will continue to work with the community college to provide training.

Grants from the U.S. Department of Labor allowed MDES to upgrade computers in its Jackson office. The agency moved some computers from that office to the McComb WIN Job Center.
