Mississippi’s Employment Situation

Jackson, MS -- Number of Jobs Continued to Grow in September – Up 7,900 Over Year. This is the latest information announced today by the Mississippi Department of Employment Security.
The number of jobs in Mississippi continued to grow in September to 1,143,900. Jobs were up 200 since August. In fact, over the year since September 2015, jobs increased by 7,900. These job figures are based on a survey of Mississippi employers and are considered the most reliable guide to job growth in our state.
Based on a separate survey of individuals, Mississippi’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 6.0% in September, which was unchanged from the August rate; however, the September 2016 rate is four-tenths of a percentage point lower than a year ago in September 2015 when the rate was 6.4 percent.
The number of people working in Mississippi rose in September by 2,300 to 1,196,200. For the year since September 2015, employment in our state posted a slight decrease of 300.
The Labor Force, which is made up of everyone who has a job or is looking for a job, increased in September by 2,100 to 1,272,100. Over the year since September 2015, the Labor Force decreased by 6,100.
The number of unemployed Mississippians fell in September by 200 to 75,900. The September 2016 figure is 5,800 lower than a year ago in September 2015 when the figure was 81,700. During the last five months of May, June, July, August, and September, Mississippi has had the lowest numbers of unemployed individuals since February 2004.
